Sometimes, I get ideas for short pieces of fiction that perhaps don’t translate as well on the written page as they might if someone could actually HEAR them. So this is one of those that isn’t in my book Vengeful Hank & Other Shortweird Stories .
This sketch is interesting, then, if only for the fact that the the only ‘script’ was a vague idea about Shatner’s ego, id, and other parts of his unconscious battling with each other for control. In other words, what would the voices inside Shatner’s head say?
My only direction to the cast would have been something like “just improvise some things Shatner might say to himself” and “I don’t care if you can’t do Shatner, just do Shatner. Even bad Shatner is good Shatner. Even Shatner can’t do Shatner!”
What finally came out of it – using snippets of lines from other sketches we’d recorded to connect-the-dots between ideas I had, ended up being a lot of fun and, somehow… I hope… making sense? And now, with all due respect to the only real Captain Kirk, I give you this.
