254-word post, or “Hitchhiker Games”

Niles Portrind flicked his signal light and pulled over to the shoulder. In the rearview, he watched the young hitchhiker pick up his backpack and run up.

Just as the young man was about to grab the door handle and let himself in, Niles hit the accelerator and peeled ahead about 100 feet, then slammed on the breaks. Grinning, he turned to look.

The hitcher seemed surprised, which Niles found even funnier as he broke out in laughter, motioning for the young man to try again.

The gag was repeated a dozen more times. By this time, even the hitcher himself was laughing at being the butt of the joke. He’d feign running towards the door, then laugh as he was pelted with gravel kicked up from the tires as Niles pulled away.

On the 13th round, Niles was surprised to see the young man – who was laughing hysterically – pull out a shovel, dig a grave, and then bury himself.

As Niles watched the young man’s arms – the only part of him not buried at that point – stick the shovel upright, and then pull themselves into the earth, he got out of the car and ran to the grave.

The young man’s arms disappeared into the earth.
