217-word post, or “Deep and Delicious”

It was summer. 1985.

For nearly 10 days, new found 12-year old besties Bella and Yolanda shared a cabin together at Lake Macktaclackamackanaw.

Every day after dinner, they’d rush back to their cabin for a piece of a secret;  a piece of McCain’s Deep and Delicious™ cake.

A cake that, even after 10 days in a cabin, did not grow stale, did not leak fluid, did not melt in the heat, did not lose a single perfectly engineered feature of it’s pristine, post-cold-war-better-living-through-chemical existence.

As they shared talk of boys, poetry, periods and Ouija boards, they ingested piece after perfect piece of cake, not quite noticing how this cake remained as perfect and store-bought fresh 10 days after it had been stored without refrigeration on a top bunk as it was when they’d started their camp-out.

Summer. 2013.

A recently divorced Bella driving westbound on Toronto’s Lakeshore saw the new billboard for Deep and Delicous Cake™. She hadn’t thought of that cake (or Yolanda) for years, but when the words “now with better ingredients” caught her eye…

Suddenly, she came online. She pulled over, and found herself dialing a number she didn’t know. One ring. Two rings, then…

“Hello?” It was Yolanda.

The cake overlords had succeeded. Yolanda and Bella were going to kill the Prime Minister.
